CIPS Diploma in Procurement and Supply

CIPS Diploma in procurement and supply is a valuable qualification for those moving into junior or middle management procurement roles or those supervising the procurement function. The qualification equips those completing the course with the necessary tools for understanding organisational procedures and processes and to be able to undertake the planning of procurement activity, negotiating with suppliers, managing risk and the analysis of data. The Diploma is a valuable qualification in its own right but possession of the Diploma is an important step in the learner’s progress to the award of MCIPS. The topics covered on the course are:

Contexts of procurement and supply (D1)

The aim of this unit is to enable candidates at the end of the unit to be able to offer advice and guidance to the main stakeholders on the undertaking of the sourcing process and to understand the supply chains in which the organisation operates. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Business needs in procurement and supply (D2)

Upon completion of this unit candidates will understand the practices that help to achieve value for money solutions in procurement. It explores a variety of elements that underpin the development of appropriate criteria and considers the options that should be explored when procurement and supply practitioners are identifying and defining procurement requirements. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Sourcing in procurement and supply (D3)

Upon completion of this unit the candidate should be able to apply a set of appropriate tools and techniques that can be used to assess sourcing options available to organisations when procuring goods or services from external suppliers. It identifies sound approaches to sourcing activates which will assist the organisation in making the correct choice of supplier. The course is examined and consists of five learning outcomes and a short unseen case study with one question on each learning outcome based on the case study in a three hour examination.

Negotiating and contracting in procurement and supply (D4)

This unit should enable procurement practitioners to identify the different approaches to negotiation with external organisations and recognise the main legal terms that are used to regulate commercial contacts. It also covers the negotiation of legally binding contracts and the resolution of subsequent conflicts over performance issues within contracts.

Managing contracts and relationships (D5)

In this unit candidates learn how to apply methods to improve supplier performance and recognise the need for a structured approach when dealing with performance and relationship issues. The main focus is on the different approaches to contract and suppler relationship management in creating contracts and relationships that will achieve the best possible outcomes in terms of cost, quality, risk and timing. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.
